What's painted on the card
The 1909 card shows no people at all. A large red heart floats in the middle of the picture, and three swords pass straight through it. Behind it, the sky is grey and heavy, and rain falls in long slanting lines. It is one of the simplest images in the deck, and that is its strength: nothing distracts from the hurt. The rain matters too. It is the sky crying, and rain is also what washes things clean and lets new things grow.
Three of Swords upright
Few cards say their meaning as plainly as this one. The Three of Swords is the pain of a broken heart: a breakup, a betrayal, a sharp word from someone you love, or news that changes how you see a person. It can also be sadness about something that ended long ago and still aches.
The swords are thoughts and words, not physical wounds. This card does not predict death, illness or violence. It describes emotional hurt, the kind that comes from what was said, done or finally understood.
The card's message is not to pretend the hurt away. The heart in the picture doesn't hide from the rain. Let yourself be sad, cry if you need to, and name what happened. Grief that is felt moves through you; grief that is pushed down tends to stay. If the sadness feels too heavy to carry alone, please talk to someone you trust or a professional.
Three of Swords reversed
Reversed, the worst of the storm is passing. You are starting to heal: the memory still stings, but it no longer takes over your day. You might be ready to forgive, or at least to stop replaying what happened.
Sometimes the reversed card shows the opposite: pain kept locked inside, with a brave face on top. If you have been telling everyone you're fine, ask yourself if that's true. Healing starts when the hurt is allowed out. Forgiveness here doesn't mean saying what happened was fine. It means you stop letting it decide how you feel today. Some scars stay, and that's all right: they show where you healed, not where you are still broken.
In love
Upright
In love, the Three of Swords points to heartbreak: a split, a betrayal, a third person, or words that cut deep. It can also mean a hard truth you both have to face. It shows a real wound, not a final verdict on the relationship. Be gentle with yourself while it hurts.
Reversed
Reversed, a heart is mending. You or your partner are working through an old hurt, apologising, or learning to trust again. Go slowly, and let the healing take the time it needs. Rebuilt trust is often stronger because both people know what it cost.
How someone feels about you
If you ask how someone feels about you and the Three of Swords appears, there is hurt in their heart. They may feel let down by you, or still be carrying pain from someone before you. Their feelings are real, but sorrow is louder than anything else right now. Kindness and honesty matter more than a quick fix.
Career and work
Upright
At work, this card can show disappointment: a rejection, a harsh review, a falling-out with a colleague, or losing something you worked hard for. Allow yourself to feel let down, then look at what you can learn. It's a hurt, not the end of your path.
Reversed
Reversed, you are recovering from a work setback. Old tensions ease, apologies are made, or you simply stop taking a past criticism to heart. You may even find the hard feedback helped. What stung at the time can turn into the lesson that made your work better.
Money
Upright
With money, the Three of Swords can show the sting of a loss or a money disagreement that turned personal. Separate the feelings from the facts, and look at the numbers when you are calm. Grief and money decisions don't mix well, so wait if you can.
Reversed
Reversed, you are getting over a money disappointment and starting to plan again with a steadier head. Look at what the loss taught you, forgive yourself for the mistake, and set one small, new goal.
Yes or no
Leans no. The Three of Swords shows pain and disappointment around the question. It suggests the answer you hope for is unlikely right now, or will come with hurt attached.
The card's advice
Let yourself feel the hurt instead of hiding it. Sorrow that is honestly felt is the first step toward healing.
Three of Swords in Starbound's spreads
The Crossroads: Where you've been
In The Crossroads, the Three of Swords in the past shows a heartbreak that still shapes you. Something hurt you deeply, and you have been carrying it. The other cards show how far you have come since then, and what that old wound still asks of you.
The Bond: Between you
In The Bond, this card between two people shows a hurt that sits in the middle of the relationship: a betrayal, a cruel word, or a loss you both share. It needs to be spoken about. Ignored, it keeps cutting; talked about honestly, it can start to heal.
The Path Ahead: What's beneath it
In The Path Ahead, the Three of Swords beneath the situation reveals a hidden sadness. You may be acting angry, busy or indifferent, but underneath there is grief. Admitting it, even only to yourself, can take a lot of weight off the whole question.
Questions about Three of Swords
Does the Three of Swords predict a death?
No. The Three of Swords doesn't predict death, illness or harm to anyone. It is about emotional pain: heartbreak, disappointment, painful words or a truth that hurts. It can reflect grief you already feel, but it says nothing about anyone's life or health.
Does the Three of Swords mean cheating?
Not always. Three swords can hint at a third person, and in love readings it sometimes shows betrayal. But it just as often means a painful argument, a breakup, or old hurt coming back. Don't treat it as proof of anything; look at the other cards and at what you actually know.
How long does the Three of Swords last?
Tarot doesn't give exact times, but this card shows a season, not a forever. The rain in the picture is a storm, and storms pass. How fast depends on how openly you let yourself grieve, and on the support you have around you. The reversed card is often the sign that healing has begun.
