What's painted on the card

On the 1909 card, an old man in a long grey cloak stands alone on a snowy mountain top. He holds up a lantern, and inside it shines a six-pointed star. With his other hand he leans on a tall staff. The scene is cold, quiet and empty of other people. He has climbed high and far from the crowd, and his lantern lights only the next few steps. He isn't lost. He is searching, slowly and on purpose, and his small light could guide anyone climbing behind him.

The Hermit upright

When The Hermit appears, it's time to step back. The noise of daily life, other people's opinions and constant input are making it hard to hear yourself. The card asks for quiet: time alone, a walk, a break from your phone, a few honest evenings with your own thoughts.

This isn't loneliness. It's a chosen retreat with a purpose. You're looking for something real: what you believe, what you want, what matters now. The answers won't come from the crowd. They come from slowing down and paying attention.

Notice that the Hermit's lantern only shows the next step, not the whole road. You don't need the full plan. Move forward by the light you have. The Hermit can also be a person: a mentor, counsellor or wise friend who offers guidance without telling you what to do.

The Hermit reversed

Reversed, The Hermit shows solitude that has gone too far. You may have pulled away from people for so long that it now feels lonely rather than restful. Or you're hiding from a problem instead of thinking it through.

It can also show the opposite: never being alone, filling every silence so you don't have to face your own thoughts. Either way, find the balance. Reach out to someone you trust, and make some genuine quiet time, not just distraction.

In love

Upright

In love, The Hermit suggests time to reflect. If you're single, you may be enjoying your own company and getting clear on what you really want before dating. In a relationship, one of you may need space; giving it without panic shows trust. Deep, quiet conversations can bring you closer.

Reversed

Reversed, distance may be turning into disconnection, or one person is shutting the other out. Gently reopen the door and say what you need.

How someone feels about you

If you ask how someone feels about you and The Hermit appears, they may be holding back, sorting out their feelings privately before sharing them. It doesn't mean they don't care. They might be shy, cautious after a hurt, or simply someone who processes slowly and on their own. Give them room; pressure will only push them further inward.

Career and work

Upright

At work, The Hermit favours focused, independent work, research and study, or time to rethink your direction. You may want work with more meaning. A mentor's advice can be very valuable now. Don't rush a career decision; reflect first.

Reversed

Reversed, you may feel isolated at work or be shutting yourself off from colleagues. Ask for input and share what you know; you don't have to solve everything alone.

Money

Upright

With money, The Hermit suggests a quiet review: look honestly at your habits and what you truly need. Simple living may appeal. For big money decisions, talk to a qualified adviser.

Reversed

Reversed, avoid hiding from money worries. Looking at the numbers is easier than carrying the fear alone.

Yes or no

Depends. The Hermit says it's too early for a clear answer. Take time to reflect; your answer depends on what you discover when you look inward.

The card's advice

Make time to be alone with your thoughts. Follow the small light you have, one step at a time.

The Hermit in Starbound's spreads

  • The Path Ahead: What's beneath it

Under the surface of The Path Ahead, The Hermit points to a deep need for time on your own, to understand yourself before you act. The situation may look like it's about other people, but underneath it's about your own search for meaning.

  • The Bond: Where it's heading

As where The Bond is heading, The Hermit suggests a quieter phase, maybe some distance, or a time when one or both of you turn inward. That isn't necessarily an ending. Space can bring clarity about what you truly want from each other.

  • The Crossroads: Where you've been

Looking back from The Crossroads, The Hermit shows a recent period of withdrawal, reflection or searching. You've done important inner work, perhaps alone. What you learned in that quiet time is now ready to guide your next steps.

Questions about The Hermit

Does The Hermit mean being alone forever?

No. The Hermit describes a phase, not a fate. It points to a chosen period of reflection, often one that makes your future relationships healthier, because you understand yourself better. The man on the card climbed the mountain on purpose, and he can come back down.

Is The Hermit a good card for a breakup?

It suggests space and reflection rather than a clean answer. After a breakup, The Hermit often advises time alone to heal and understand what happened before deciding anything. If you're hoping to reconnect, it asks for patience, not chasing.

What does The Hermit mean as a person?

As a person, The Hermit is thoughtful, wise and private: a teacher, counsellor or older friend who listens more than they talk. They value depth over small talk and need plenty of time alone. When they do give advice, it's usually worth hearing.
