What's painted on the card

On the 1909 card, a king sits on a throne decorated with lions and salamanders. He holds a sprouting wand, still alive with green shoots. A small salamander sits on the ground beside him. Unlike the Queen, he doesn't face us. He sits turned to the side, looking out at something beyond the edge of the card, as if he could stand up and act at any moment. He rules, but his mind is on the next horizon, not on his throne.

King of Wands upright

The King of Wands is a leader with a vision. He doesn't wait for things to happen; he decides where to go and gets others excited to go with him. When he appears, you're asked to take charge: of a project, a team, a family plan, or simply your own direction.

Many readers see him as a real person, and his traits are easy to spot. He's the founder, the coach, the one who walks into a room and gives it a goal. He's honest, generous with ideas and quick to decide. He can also be impatient with slow people and slow plans.

Then there's the King inside you. He's the part that can see where things could go and has the nerve to commit. Notice that his wand is still sprouting, even in his hands: real leadership keeps growing. Set a clear goal, say it out loud, and let your energy pull others along.

King of Wands reversed

Reversed, the King's strength turns sour. He may become arrogant, bossy or quick to anger, pushing people instead of inspiring them. Expectations get so high that nobody, including you, can meet them. Big promises may come with little follow-through.

If this describes someone else, protect yourself calmly: you don't have to accept being bullied, and you can step back or seek support. If it describes you, ask whether you're leading or just controlling. Listening more and deciding a little slower would help.

In love

Upright

In love, the King of Wands is a passionate, loyal partner who knows what he wants. He's protective and generous, and he likes shared plans and adventures. Single, you may meet someone confident and driven, or step into that energy yourself.

Reversed

Reversed, a partner may be domineering, short-tempered or self-centred. Healthy love doesn't require you to shrink. Speak up, and seek support if a relationship feels controlling.

How someone feels about you

With the King of Wands, their feelings are confident and serious. This person sees you as someone worth pursuing and may act boldly to show it. They're likely to be protective and generous. They want a partner who shares their drive. They won't hide how they feel for long.

Career and work

Upright

Leadership roles, running your own business, or heading up a big idea all suit the King of Wands at work. Share your vision clearly, make decisions, and let people help you carry them out.

Reversed

Reversed, watch for a difficult boss, or for your own impatience with others. Lead by example rather than pressure, and keep your promises realistic.

Money

Upright

With money, the King of Wands favours long-term vision and confident decisions. Build on your own skills and ideas, and get expert advice for big moves.

Reversed

Reversed, beware of overconfident money choices or big risks taken to impress others. A bold plan still needs numbers that add up, and a second opinion before you commit.

Yes or no

Leans yes. The King of Wands leans yes when you're ready to take charge and commit. It favours bold, well-aimed decisions.

The card's advice

Decide where you're going and lead the way there. Inspire people, don't push them.

Questions about King of Wands

Why does the King of Wands sit turned to the side?

Most kings in the deck face us, settled on their thrones. This one looks past the edge of the card, half ready to stand. It shows a ruler whose mind is already on the next plan. That restlessness is his gift, because he sees what's coming. It's also his weak spot: he may miss what's right in front of him.

What is the difference between the King and Queen of Wands?

Both are confident, warm and brave, and both lead. The difference is in how. The Queen gathers people around her and keeps many things going at once, so her strength is presence. The King sets one big goal and gets everyone moving toward it. You'd go to her for encouragement, and to him for a direction.

Is the King of Wands a good boss?

Upright, usually yes. He's the manager who shares a clear vision, trusts people with big tasks and gets the team excited. He can be impatient with slow progress. Reversed, he can turn into a boss who sets impossible targets or loses his temper. If work feels like that, you don't have to accept it; talk to someone you trust about it.
